Sound of Confusion - Free Song

Hey there, if you dig free stuff n cool stuff.

The Sound of Confusion show in a radical step of promotion has its very own web page. Also the show is now on three night a week (Mon, Thu, Sat, all 8pm) and is mighty. Can be heard online. It be the jewel in the Radio Scilly programming schedule that weighs heavily but handsomely on Kev's shoulders.

You can check it out here. Its barer than care bear on the beach at the moment but I'm sure it'll get kind a funky kinda quickly.

To celebrate this monumental event. There's a free download of Marylou available from there from........now. Kev will be posting up free tracks of various bands he digs as it goes along.

La Bell Photos

So the grand news is The Bell makses a kicking little rock and roll venue. Great night and darn, The Pale Blue Eyes, they just shone. Everyone could feel it, they just frickin ruled. Definately gonna head back there soon. Cheers to Charlotte for taking some pics.

A couple of vids from Limelight Theatre

I dig Open Mikes. You got a host of performers that do a couple of songs. Nice n short, if you're getting bored. You never know what you gonna see, poetry, rap, 14 year old Rage Against the machine covers, 4 year old singers and a whole bunch of sinners. They often kind of get taken over by Dylan coverers, but if there's a balance, well that's cool too.

One the greatest open mike nights for variety is at the Limelight Theatre in Aylesbury run by Pete. As other venues come and go in Aylesbury, say what you like, this show keeps on running. Its got integrity.

Another great night is the Catweazle Night in Oxford which has been running well over 10 years. No electricity, shout yer songs out, candles and real ale. I really need to get back down there.

Anyway, here's a couple of vids from the Limelight night that I did a couple of years ago. My rattlin away seems to have got a little more popular since Seasick Steve showed how its done on tv.

Set yer Slinky to Stun - This Saturday

I dig slinkys. They happily shimmer down the staircase in a profoundly organized manner, and end up neatly stacked waiting to go round again. And the sound is tingling.

So we're gonna slinky and shuffle down the Bell Hotel this Saturday. We got support from the Pale Blue Eyes doing an acoustic set and DJ Squidelica up from London to munch through a pile of garage rock vinyl.

Seems like long time since we played in Aylesbury...

Here and by the way, the photo in the poster is a publicity still from a Japanese 70s film called Girl Boss Gurilla. A film that mixes Straw Dogs with Hello Kitty. I haven't seen it yet, but been dying to see it since seeing the pricey Pinky Violence boxset cover below. Sure is pretty.

Well, I’m gonna progress onto six strings shortly after the show.

Excellent. You’ve been having trouble with your G-string on the way down. Quite literally, that’s me not doing a silly gag.

It was kinda sounding like a wedgie.

Right. OK….is it all sorted now.

Right. We’ve had a question in for you from a Tim. Where do you get the names for all yer band members from because his daughter would like to know?

I get em off crisp packets.

If its below 60% I usually don’t consider it as a good band name but above 60% its good.

What are you going to play?

Well this ones called All Aboard. Which ummm., you know Paul. When we were doing the Camel Rock festival we were having a lot of trouble getting here. We lost our drummer to New Zealand who later got replaced by Tim. And I landed my car in the ditch and had a whole load of problems. I was on the phone to Paul every night and decided to write a song about it…

Got another question for you Delmondo! Is it true you look like Johnny Depp? That’s from Tania, thought it might be somebody you knew.

Yeah Tania and me are intimate friends. Only she would know.

Yeah, alright. So. Is it true you look like Johnny Depp?

Well I like to consider Johnny looks like me.

That’s probably a better way of looking at it.

It’s the better way. He’s an actor. He’s just getting in character all the time.

Yeah. Basically. Well obviously. In the Pirates of the Caribbean films he’s based his character on Keith Richards apparently.

Yeah. Who also looked to me for influence?

Of course he did. That’s why he plays a five string guitar like you do.

Well some of you might know who read the blog is that the album is supposed to be out. But when it was delivered by the manufacturers we got a 1000 cds of german reggae.

Yeah! They’re probably chuffed to the moon. Coz they haven’t sent them to me yet.

Melting Pot - Jericho Tavern Party on Saturday

This saturday, June 7th, we be shuffling on down to the Jericho Tavern for Ads birthday bonzai bonanza of the melting pot. Its gonna have that party vibe on the night I reckon. There's at least two birthdays including mine. Helium Soul releasing their new cut, curious to hear it. Bloke will be there grinnin wild. And The Dirty Tricks from Norwich tourin their way through Oxford.

Plus we'll be wired from watching the Dirtbombs.

Bootstrap Posters

I'm kind a big fan of good artwork in music. The better bands of the last few years like Pavement, White Stripes, Blues Explosion, Flaming Lips, Royal Trux all have great artwork. Unfortunately its hard to name many UK Bands that bother, used to love the Senseless Things covers by Jamie Hewlett but the list kinda ends there and I don't know why.

Anyway, someone else can work that out, we've made a little gallery of the stuff we've done and been done for us for posters and its up on the website right about here. Wanted to do it like a rolf harris gallery bit with the music going from picture to picture and a commentary going "and now for a picture from Rachel age 6 of an elephant, I like the ways shes done the trunk...." But hell, I aint got time for that.

The best poster artist around at the moment (except Kerry of course) is Jay Ryan and all the stuff he does in the US. He's got a book out called '100 Posters, 134 Squirrels' which is very cool. His site is over here, part of the Bird Machine lot. He does this kinda thang:

Nags Head, April 18th

We wallow back on down to de Nags Head next Friday with them Bloke. High Wycombe. Nags Head is gettin darn good now as a venue, you can feel it cracklin in the cracks and fizzlin in the drinks. A kind a buzz and a ting of a prowlin tiger waitin to pounce.

Review - Tube Club

Bootstrap are a fine group of people and musicians. good fun and talented producing the kind of music after our own hearts. Its bluegrass, folky garagey and with songs that back up the great sound. Played finely tonight and really are the kind of band that could provide a good film soundtrack. Film directors should check em out..

Oh boy o boy. Oh Bar this Friday

The Swan Thame

Sunday night is always booked with just a tad of trepidation due to it always clashing with Antiques Roadshow and other Sunday pursuits which dent expectations of what the gig will be.

2. Last Sunday we played the Swan with Bloke and it was packed to within an inch of the stage. Hot n sweaty. Just the ticket. There was dancing, things smashin, falling and just a general kind a feel that we were playing on an edge of a sonic cliff.

There was this one bit where we were settling into a new bouncy number and I could feel that floor heavin and rolling with the jiggin going on. Now thats what floors be for, not for cleanin, carpeting, or admirin but rolling like waves. Now if ya don't believe me, ask the landlord, he went down to the cellar afterwads, his lights were smashed and there a little flooding. Hell yeah!

Obligatory listening - Kev's Sound of Confusion

Sometimes I grimace at the thought of being in Saturday night. It seems unesscessary and Ant and Dec don't help. They really don't. You just want to be elsewhere. Though tonight I was in fits listening to Kev's 'Graveyard Slot' on Radio Scilly. He plays damn fine records, starting the show with Spacemen 3, moving on to Kings of Leon, The Sonics, Bootstrap, Bo Diddley, Silver Apples, Blondie, The Who, Spirtualized and a bunch others. Great show.

Plus, the nice man, made Bootstrap his 'Obligatory record of the week'. He played Englands Dead sandwiched between the Sonics and Bo Diddley, darn cool by me and then played Cecille after the Who later on.

Kev has been doing his 'Sound of Confusion' show on Thursday nights for what I reckon must coming on for a year now and it gets better and better. Though its on Radio Scilly, the small but mighty station, with the internet, he's growing an international audience purely through playing great music.

Doc Teger takes a scientific interest in Bootstrap

We don't go asking for reviews, may do one day, but when they turn up we are mightly happy. So when we turn up in a scientific blog about the bootstrapping process, well I kind a dig that. Here ya go:

And, for some extracurricular bootstrapping, take the Replacements, some Lou Reed, a dash of early Bowie, a pinch of Violent Femmes, some 60s surf sounds, a big garage with the door closed, and you have the British band Bootstrap and their song Streetlight. The video uses scenes from Faster Pussycat Kill Kill, the classic film by Russ Meyer. A configuration made in heaven!

Rumbold Shoots

Rumbold is an old friend of the band and a dab hand at the photographic image. He came down to Runway Studios to take a few pics out on the Runway. For y'all who don't know the studio. Its out on this wasteland of abandoned WWII runway field outside Aylesbury. Wasteland is a good word. You get these amazing sunsets and weird stuff rusting away stretched over what seems miles. Kind of Aylesbury's inland version of Dungeoness, another great wasteland. Though in a competition of wastelands, Dungeoness has a minature railway and nuclear power station, its gonna win.

Jacob's Mouse No Fish Shop Parking

If its not psych, garage or suicidal, chances are some seminal records that no one noticed when they came out and no one noticed when they hit bargain bin will ever get noticed. I can't wait to go see the Sonics in a couple of weeks, it a frickin miracle that they're playing. I wanna see more things like this happen and I'm gonna put forward that these guys should be in the queue. Jacob's Mouse. And this record, No Fish Shop Parking.

I don't know why they got forgotten, maybe its the singing drummer thing, long hair, bury st. edmunds, but this record stands up there with pixies come on, pilgrim for me, if not better. When it came out it, it hit you the same way as Pilgrim with a sideways blow of what rockin music could sound like. If you took all the shininess out yeah yeah yeahs, recorded it deep underground with menace and kubrick stare you kinda be there. Do that 15 years ago as well. I aint gonna go into each song n stuff but if yer pass it in a bargain bucket or down the exchange for £2, pick it up and turn it on. Group of Seven and Rubber room are cool too.

Towersey

A couple of weeks a go we played this gig in the middle on knowhere. I thought Aylesbury was exact center on knowhere, but if you head 15 miles south to the small town of Thame and then 2-3 miles down a dead end road to a sleepy village, you found Towersey. Nice place, nice people but as knowhere goes it is pretty close. We thought we were playing in the Three Horsehoes pub but nope, head across the car park to a converrted barn which looks like a medieval chapel and you've found it.

So on top of this, it was £7 on the door and in aid of charity. So ya can see our expectations of playing to more than a doorman were pretty slim. But this crazy things happens, it sells out, the place is heaving, we setup lights and a stage, the beer is flowing, everyone a dancing n a jiggin. For 2-3 hours knowhere seems like friggin good place to be. Had a magical night.

Just wanted to say cheers to the guys promoting it, Bloke, Mungo and everyone who came down and made it cool. And dif ya got photos, send us some.
